Happy Birthday Stephen Duffy.

Stephen Duffy is a British songwriter, vocalist and guitarist. He has recorded as a solo act under several different names, and is the lead singer for the group The Lilac Time. He has also co-written many songs with Steven Page of Barenaked Ladies.

While attending Birmingham Polytechnic school, he and school friend John Taylor formed an obscure, arty new romantic group called Duran Duran, along with Taylor's non-student friend Nick Rhodes. Duffy was the lyricist and vocalist but left both the school and the band in 1979, well before their 1980 signing with EMI.

In 1982, he created the band Tin Tin who signed with WEA Records in the UK and released the song "Kiss Me," which went to #155 on the UK chart.

The song was re-released on Feb. 25, 1985. It debuted at Number 22, peaked at Number 3, and stayed in the UK top 10 for three months. It was the last song played on the medium wave service of Radio 1 before it became an FM only station on Jul. 1, 1994.

Happy Birthday Danny Elfman.

Elfman got his start in the 1970s playing in two theater troupes started by his older brother Richard - Le Grande Magic Circus, and The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. After eight years in the Mystic Knights as a singer, composer, guitarist, and trombonist, he pared the troupe down to a rock band who then began their transformation to Oingo Boingo.

Elfman's vocal range and manic stage presence led Oingo Boingo to a long series of recordings and a cult following.

Elfman, as a composer, is a frequent collaborator with director Tim Burton and has scored such films as Beetlejuice, Big Fish, Edward Scissorhands, and 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Happy Birthday Steve Strange.

Steve Strange, born Steven John Harrington, is a British pop icon. He is best remembered as an influential party promoter and as the frontman for the band Visage which he formed with Midge Ure. When their song "Fade to Grey" hit the UK Singles Chart in 1981 it began an imminent commercial breakthrough for electronic music and the whole New Romantic movement.

Strange is often referred to as the "Ultimate New Romantic," as his influence on the British club scene of the early 1980s and on synthesized music can still be seen today.

Happy Birthday Prince Buster.

Cecil Bustamente Campbell, better known as Prince Buster, is a musician from Kingston, Jamaica and is regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of ska music.

Campbell's music career began around the growing 'sound system craze.' Across Jamaica, music promoters drove vans filled with stereo equipment to stage mobile parties. The operators of the sound system would play the most popular R&B dance records of the day, and often they would have a vocalist called a toaster call out the dancers' names, chant in rhythm, and make light-hearted boasts. The toaster form was the primary influence on early rap MC's.

Between 1962 and 1967 Prince Buster, already a sought-after producer, churned out over 600 songs including "One Step Beyond," "Al Capone," which was the first Jamaican record to break into Britain's top 20, and "Madness," later to inspire the band The North London Invaders. The North London Invaders, better known as Madness, released their first single "The Prince" in September 1979, which was followed by their debut album One Step Beyond.

Happy Birthday Siouxsie.

One of the most successful groups to emerge from the punk rock movement of the late 1970s, Siouxsie and the Banshees have sold nearly 50 million records worldwide.

Happy Birthday Neil Finn.

Joined elder brother Tim's band Split Enz in 1977. Wrote their first international hit "I Got You," and contributed significantly to all their later albums, briefly assuming leadership of the band after Tim left in 1983 and until they broke up in 1984.

Formed a band called The Mullanes, which was later renamed Crowded House. Has had a reasonably successful solo career, and he and Tim have continued to work together and have recorded a total of two Finn Brothers albums as of 2004.

Both Neil and Tim were made OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to New Zealand music in the 1993 Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Split Enz are set to reform for a tour of Australia beginning in July.

Representing. Vol. 17. The Cult.

(torontosun.com 5/27/06) They won't see 40 again, they've broken up at least twice, their glory days were two decades ago and they haven't released an album of new material in five years. And yet Toronto has never stopped loving The Cult.

On their latest reunion tour -- the first in more than three years -- the British band has been playing to North American club audiences of up to a couple of thousand people.

Last night in Toronto, however, despite the cool, foggy weather, they nearly filled the Molson Amphitheatre with fist-pumping, hip-shaking fans.

It's a mystery why this particular city should be so smitten by The Cult's combination of big guitar riffage and wailing vocals, but the band was wise enough to be loudly appreciative, sending out lavish thank-yous along with the flying tambourines and non-stop rock.

The Cult has had a strange history filled with musical left turns, revolving rhythm sections, awkward hiatuses, rehab stints and waxing and waning sales.

Singer Ian Astbury -- who spent the past few years playing Jim Morrison in a new version of The Doors -- and guitarist Billy Duffy founded it in the early '80s, and have taken its sound from goth to punk to psychedelia to quasi-metallic classic rock.

Their critical and commercial peak happened when producer Rick Rubin helped them put it all together with monster guitar riffs and over-the-top vocals to make Electric, which spawned hits like "Love Removal Machine," and "Wild Flower."

And though the band has never matched that early success, they've continued to churn out enough similarly high-powered songs to keep the fans coming -- especially in Toronto.

Like a creaky but powerful old machine, last night's show took a while to get going, but eventually settled into an impressive, if not relentless pace.

A bearded, kerchief-topped Astbury sounded a little tentative on the opener, "Lil Devil," and its followup, "Sweet Soul Sister," but by the time he got to "Electric Ocean," which he described as obscure, and "Revolution," he was in fine vocal form, whooping and wailing as he beat the tambourine and maracas and Duffy churned out the punk riffs.

Chestnuts like "Spiritwalker" -- the band's earliest hit -- and "Rain" were followed by "In The Clouds" and, after a swig of Red Bull on Duffy's part, "Wonderland," which was dedicated to Doors manager Danny Sugarman.

Then the backing band of powerhouse drummer John Tempesta (White Zombie), bassist Chris Wyse and extra guitarist Mike Dimkich took a break while Astbury and Duffy did an acoustic take on "Edie (Ciao Baby)."

When they came back, it was time to take it home with "Fire Woman," "Peace Dog" and "Wild Flower."

There was no sign of new material, despite Astbury's claim that the band was "back for good this time -- no more rehab."

But as long as they can please this many people with old material, they won't have to worry about that. At least not in Toronto.

Happy Three Day Weekend.

According to sky.com, too many people self medicate with alcohol to make themselves feel better.

A new study by the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) found that 88% of people would find it difficult to give up alcohol completely. At least 77% said it made them feel relaxed. Almost two thirds (63%) of more than 1,000 people questioned said alcohol made them feel happy, 51% felt less inhibited and 41% felt more confident while drinking. Almost half (44%) felt booze made them "able to fit in socially," 40% felt less anxious and 31% felt they could make friends more easily.

Dr. Andrew McCulloch, chief executive of the foundation, said: "The research confirms our worries that people are drinking to cope with emotions and situations they can't otherwise manage. Drinking alcohol is a very common and accepted way of coping - our culture allows us to use alcohol for 'medicinal purposes' or 'dutch courage' from an early age. But using alcohol to deal with anxiety and depression doesn't work."

American Woman recipe

Cue The Tumbleweed Blowing By...

as Waist High's one time favorite blog Fresyes has officially been abandoned 4 months now.

How about some random Fresno facts while we wait for his return:

Fresno and the surrounding area produce about 60 percent of the world's raisins and about 90 percent of the raisins sold on the U.S. market. In recent years, the city's economy has expanded to include manufacturing, service, and industrial operations.

The name Fresno, meaning "ash tree" in Spanish, was first applied to the nearby Fresno River because ash trees were seen growing along its banks. The city assumed the name in 1872 when the Central Pacific Railroad founded it as a station.

Fresno was the fastest-growing big city in the United States during the 1980s, with a growth rate of 61.3 percent. Fresno is the sixth-largest city in California and the largest inland city in the state. Fresno is known for being the largest American city not directly linked to an Interstate highway.

Fresno's elevation is 296 feet above sea level.

Fresno County is in the San Joaquin Valley of central California. Downtown Los Angeles is 220 miles to the south and east, Monterey, on the Pacific Coast is almost directly to the west, 160 miles by road, and San Francisco is 185 miles to the north and west. The southern entrance to Yosemite National Park is about 65 miles to the north, while the entrance to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is about 55 miles to the east.

Happy Birthday Paul Weller.

Pushing the limits has always been the musical philosophy of Waist High favorite Paul Weller.

From his time with The Jam, still for many the most inspirational group of the last thirty years, through to the pop genius of The Style Council, to his ever-evolving solo career, he has always made a point of keeping ahead of the throng.

Now with a new generation of bands inspired by his music and mindset, Paul Weller has, without a doubt, earned his stripes, proven further still by his recent 2006 BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and nomination for MOJO magazine's Honours List 2006 'Inspiration Award,' which is "presented to an act that has been the catalyst for music fans and fellow musicians alike."

"Easy To Use. With Immediate And Lasting Results."

After marijuana "enhancer" and pesty neighbor control, say hello to the third best use of everyone's favorite insect killer:

Woman Allegedly Hits Two With Raid Can

ATHENS, Ala. (AP) -- A woman was charged with domestic violence for allegedly hitting her husband and another woman on the head with a can of Raid bug spray after she found them together.

Police Sgt. Trevor Harris said a "nosy neighbor" called the woman at work on Friday and told her that her husband was at their apartment having an affair with another woman, prompting the wife to head home.

"She came in and caught her husband with another woman and she grabbed a can of Raid and went at it," said another officer, Capt. Marty Bruce. "She hit the husband in the back of the head with it and then turned on the woman and also hit her in the head."

The woman who was struck needed stitches for a head wound, police said, and the husband also was cut but did not require medical treatment.

Cornelia Cottrell Smith, 26, of Athens was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence and released from the City Jail after posting a $1,000 bond. No one answered a call Tuesday at a telephone number listed for her address.

Sometimes when the universe wants to get your attention, it taps you on the shoulder. Pay attention to what you might initially dismiss as a series of meaningless coincidences, or the next time, it'll use a baseball bat

on a day when you are taking your car into the shop to get "diagnosed," what could possibly go wrong?

Happy Birthday Jerry Dammers.

Founder and keyboard player of the Coventry based band the Coventry Automatics who later changed their name to The Specials.

Jerry was the co-founder of Two Tone Records. He has recently "carved out a sizeable following as a DJ, playing retro-future mood music from jazz to library, electronic to dub, and was bestowed with Q magazine's 'Lifetime Merit Award.'"

Happy Birthday Iva Davies.

Iva Davies is a formally trained classical musician. His parallel interest in popular music and ability as a guitarist singer/composer led, in 1977, to the formation of the Australian musical group Flowers, later known as Icehouse.

As leader and founder of Icehouse he achieved substantial success both locally and internationally over a period of twenty years. Icehouse produced, over that period, roughly thirty local hit songs including "Hey Little Girl," "Crazy," "Electric Blue," "Touch the Fire," "No Promises," and "Great Southern Land."

As a composer/songwriter Iva Davies has written over one hundred published songs.

Good Sunday Morning To You All.

Hey California, can you keep your kids off my lawn!

Teens Busted When Bong Falls At Trooper's Feet

GREEN, Ore. -- Three California youths had their road trip interrupted when a bong fell from their car at the feet of a policeman during a traffic stop. An Oregon State trooper pulled the car over Thursday near the Douglas County town of Green.

Police said the large drug pipe fell out as 18 year old Benjamin Breiner of Berkeley, Calif., opened the car door. The trooper said he found a bag of psilycybin mushrooms and several bags of marijuana.

One occupant, 19 year old Michael Fox of Oakland, Calif., told the officer he had a California medical marijuana card, but the card is not valid in Oregon. Breiner and another occupant were cited for alcohol charges and released.

Fox was jailed on drug charges.

Happy 45th Birthday Nick Heyward.

Born in Beckenham, Kent, England in 1961, Nick was the lead man for Haircut 100 for only one album, Pelican West. Pelican West delivered beloved Waist High favorites "Love Plus One," and "Favorite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)." Both songs reached the UK top 10 in 1982. "The album gave you a lot of what it was to be a New Wave fan. It came during an innocent time, and musically, the best time ever." (Lou via amazon.com)

Nick left the band for a solo career at the end of 1982, and his debut solo album North of a Miracle, which included "Whistle Down the Wind," was released in 1983.

According to icebergradio.com, it was "a solid effort that won critical approval and sold well."

"In 2004, all of the group's ex-members reunited for an episode of VH1's Bands Reunited series. The group has seriously discussed the idea of reuniting to record a new album, with Heyward being quoted as saying, 'We're all older and have commitments but wouldn't it be good to dedicate two weeks of our lives to creating a follow-up to Pelican West. It would have that magic because nobody as a player has gone off the boil.'"

"Over-Researching" Lately Bake Town??

Ditching the original idea for this post after reading that long time Waist High enemy Bake Town is not only in love with her bed, but admitted on the internet to being a slut, Waist High would simply like you to read something from msn.match.com. Oh, I almost forgot, but not before reading Bake Town's little slip: "I've begun a new love affair. This love affair is different from any I've had before. I know it will last. I know I can count on it to bring me hours of pleasure, comfort, and support. You see, this love affair is with my bed. Now I've been loving my bed for some time now. It is the most comfortable bed in the world. Everyone says so."

SHOULD YOU WED THE FIRST PERSON YOU FALL FOR?

"How many people should you wine and dine before you can feel confident enough to say you've met your one and only? Believe it or not, mathematics has the answer: A dozen. 'Check out and reject 12 people, then pick the next best that comes along, and you're likely to have a very good match on your hands,' says Clio Cresswell, a mathematician and author of Mathematics and Sex. That's because when it comes to decision-making, formulas reveal that your chances of picking the right answer improve as you expose yourself to more options. But there does come a point when you are over-researching: If you date and reject 30 or more potential mates, 'you've probably met someone that you could possibly have been more than happy with, and passed them over,' notes Cresswell."

Happy Friday.

DRINK UP TO BEAT HANGOVERS

It's the dream of everybody who likes a drink but hates themselves the morning after.

Experts are working on hangover-free drinks that will get you merry, but with no regrets. Psycho-pharmacologist David Nutt, from the University of Bristol in Britain, says the cocktails would be designed to mimic the pleasurable effects of alcohol without the downsides.

They would allow people to get merry but not legless, wake without a hangover, and avoid effects such as nausea, memory loss, depression and aggression. Nor would they damage the liver, as alcohol does.

The idea is only on the drawing board, but there is no reason why such drinks could not be made now using existing know-how, according to Professor Nutt.

Happy 60th Birthday Tommy's Original World Famous Hamburgers.

The 24-hour eatery at the corner of Beverly and Rampart in Los Angeles celebrated it's 60th anniversary Monday. Tommy's is now a chain with 29 outlets, but this is where it all started. In honor of the occasion, Tommy's was selling a chili-topped cheeseburger and drink for 60 cents. The location, founded in 1949 by the late Tommy Koulax, had 15,000 hamburger patties and 400 gallons of chili on hand for the special promotion.

In health-conscious, sushi-loving Southern California, Tommy's is as much an institution as it is an addiction for lovers of its greasy fare.

"The chili is what draws us more than anything," said Ron Farris, who shared his family's obsession with Tommy's and was honored as the winner of the restaurant's Ultimate Fan Contest.

Happy Birthday Glenn Gregory.

Taking their name from a fictional pop group mentioned in Anthony Burgess's novel A Clockwork Orange, Heaven 17 formed when Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware split from their earlier group The Human League and formed production company British Electric Foundation (BEF). Shortly after, they recruited their good friend and photographer Glenn Gregory on vocals to complete their lineup.

Heaven 17's biggest hit, "Temptation," is said by some to have defined the 1980s.

Glenn Gregory has gone on to work with an exciting range of artists including Tina Turner, Grace Jones, Propaganda, Terence Trent D'Arby, Ultravox, Midge Ure, John Lydon, and Martin Fry. Glenn most recently teamed up with Keith Lowndes, who toured with ABC before becoming an internationally renowned DJ, and formed Honeyroot, producing what they call "soulful electronica."

Asked by Melvin Welters in 1997 what is the best Heaven 17 track and album, Gregory had this to say:

"Oh I don't know. I suppose it's not that hard really. My favourite Heaven 17 track is 'Let Me Go.' And now you want to know why. Well, I think it's the song we all feel should have done better, it's almost the song I would like to be remembered for (but I guess that's going to be Temptation.) It took a lot of getting right but once we were there we all really loved it, we were convinced it was a top ten hit (it wasn't). Maybe there's still time? The best album though I have no problem with, Penthouse and Pavement. My first ever recordings, and nothing can better that experience."

Just Another Reason We Love The Number 86.

86-Year-Old Woman Fulfills Skydiving Dream

MOLALLA, Ore. -- An 86-year-old woman fulfilled a lifelong dream Thursday by jumping from a plane.

Friends and family cheered on Glenna Sparks as she boarded the plane in Molalla with an expert skydiving instructor from Skydive Oregon. As the plane climbed into the sky, those on the ground were anxious. But inside the plane, Sparks was ready. After her jump, onlookers clapped as Sparks was helped back into her wheelchair.

"I don't know, it was nice," said Sparks, a woman of few words. Sparks says she wants to try something a little more dangerous next time.

Happy Birthday David Gahan.

"...by virtue of their electronic music and evident taste for make up and flash clothes, Depeche Mode in fact far outshine many a better known name by virtue of their ability to write GREAT TUNES and treat them right." (First ever mention in Smash Hits, 1981.)

Happy Birthday Anne Dudley.

Musician, composer, arranger and producer.

Anne's career in pop music started with a meeting with Trevor Horn in the early 1980s. She was the keyboard player and arranger on such records as ABC's Lexicon of Love, Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Two Tribes," and Malcolm McLaren's "Buffalo Gals," which she co-wrote.

Anne was a founding member of Art of Noise, whose pioneering attitude towards sampling was highly innovative and remains influential to this day. Art of Noise are popularly remembered for their collaborations with Duane Eddy, ("Peter Gunn,") Max Headroom, ("Paranoimia,") and Tom Jones, ("Kiss,") but it is tracks such as "Moments in Love," and "Close to the Edit" which have provided the blueprint for the "remixology" age. The group re-invented itself for the Millennium with a stunning album The Seduction of Claude Debussy.

Anne has been writing music for films for fifteen years. Her scores include The Crying Game, Buster, and Pushing Tin. In 1998 Anne won an Oscar for The Full Monty score. It is now the highest grossing film in the UK of all time. The soundtrack won a Brit at the 1998 awards and is already a triple platinum album.

Anne recently produced and arranged Alison Moyet's hit album entitled Voice, a collection of evocative and atmospheric standards. Alison toured to promote the album in April and May 2005.

Ah Yes. Something That Is Sponsored By Old Grand Dad.

Waist High this week has received more e-mails, links, 'pictures as gifts,' and questions about her breasts disguised as questions about a t-shirt, than any week in the history of Waist High. And because, thank God, Waist High does not have public comments, you my fine readers have been left out of all the fun. And this, I can not do to you.

Revealing to you my answers, will more than likely reveal to you the questions.

Yes, my breasts are real. Yes, I know they are perky for a 38 year old. Yes, it is a recent picture. I don't know, it is probably the padded bra. I marched into the front office of West High School, asked to talk to the activities director, and asked if she had any t-shirts for sale. No, I never mentioned that I was Waist High to try to get free t-shirts. I can not reveal the identity of "Tri-Tip." Yes, he is funny. Yes, he knows that everything he says could possibly end up on Waist High. Most of my quotes of the week come from him. Yes, he can have his very own "Quote of the Week." Yes, I get hate mail. Yes, the "mild" mannered Waist High felt the use of the words M***** F***** were appropriate for the situation. No, I have never tried Clamato and beer. It sounds sick. No, I do not need anymore pictures of Old Grand Dad related things. Thank you for the Old Grand Dad quote. No, you are not bothering me.

Jake "The Skate" Soros: "I'm pretty happy where I'm at. Just doing my thing, figuring some shit out. I have a couple of friends who went straight, they have pretty good jobs now. I've been thinking about going back and finishing college. Did you know I was a business major? True story. I was going to be a stock broker like my Granddad. Man, I miss that stuff."
J. Waller: "College?"
Jake "The Skate" Soros: "No, Old Grand Dad Whiskey. Smooooth."

SCIENTISTS WORKING ON BEER FOR MENOPAUSE

Prague - Women struggling with the discomforts of menopause may soon find relief in a cold glass of beer. Experts in the Czech Republic are working on a beer specifically brewed for women experiencing hot flashes, troubling sleeping and other woes during this phase.

The low-kilojoule, low-alcohol beer being developed by the Prague-based Research Institute of Brewing and Malting contains heightened levels of phytoestrogen, a plant form of the hormone estrogen often lacking in menopausal women, said the institute's director Karel Kosar.

Phytoestrogen is found in the hops and barley malt used in many types of beer. Kosar said breweries could produce the special beer by increasing the levels of these ingredients.

A gynaecologist working with the institute reported good results from clinical tests with the beer on 20 women. The volunteers who drank three decilitres nightly for two months reported fewer menopausal symptoms.

The gynaecologist, Dr Milan Anton of Masaryk University in Brno, plans to expand the research.

"While the latter two later emerged in the Teardrop Explodes and Wah!," McCulloch "joined forces with guitarist Will Sergeant and bass player Les Pattinson to form Echo And The Bunnymen" at the end of 1978.
