Widely considered one of Echo and the Bunnymen's best, 1984's Ocean Rain made #38 on The Observer's 100 GREATEST BRITISH ALBUMS list. Ocean Rain went to #4 on the UK Albums Chart, and to #87 in the US.
The band's fourth studio album was recorded in Liverpool, Bath, and Paris; the Paris material with a 35-piece orchestra. Three singles were issued from Ocean Rain, "The Killing Moon," "Silver," and "Seven Seas," which was released in July 1984. The album's title track, "Ocean Rain," is a long-time Waist High favorite.
Described as "The greatest album ever made" by the band during its promotional campaign, Ocean Rain remains "Echo and the Bunnymen's most ambitious and cohesive '80s release--a steppingstone that really should have led the band to world-wide fame. This is where the band left any traces of post-punk shambling behind and reached for the stars. The majestic mood of the album is heightened by the extravagant string arrangements that underpin Ian McCulloch's plaintive croon. On 'The Killing Moon,' one of the band's finest moments, the orchestra is deployed to spectacular effect. McCulloch gives the performance of his life..."
Echo and the Bunnymen, minus Pete de Freitas and Les Pattinson, celebrated their 30 year anniversary in 2008 by performing Ocean Rain in it's entirety on a handful of dates in the UK, and with one show at Radio City Music Hall.

"Modern rock innovators Echo and the Bunnymen will make a triumphant live return to New York's Radio City Music Hall on October 1, where the band will be performing their landmark 1984 album, Ocean Rain, with an orchestra as part of its 30th anniversary celebration. Pre-sale tickets can be had through the band's official website beginning April 26, with tickets available to the general public a week later."
The album, widely considered their best, is #38 on The Observer's 100 GREATEST BRITISH ALBUMS list.
The band will play at Liverpool's Echo Arena on Nov. 27, almost 30 years to the day after they played their first gig at Erics in Liverpool.
The group's current incarnation comprises Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant along with Stephen Brennan (bass), Gordy Goudie (guitar), Nicholas Kilroe (drums), and Ceri James (keyboards). The band will release a new album, The Fountain, this summer. The album will be preceded by a single, "Think I Need Two," on Jul. 14.
In related news, McCulloch is set to publish his memoirs next year.
"Book publisher Transworld recently bought the rights to the singer's memoirs from Mayer Benham, and plans to publish them in summer 2009. Simon Taylor, editorial director of Transworld, said in a statement: 'The man is a one-off, an iconic figure whose passion for words, music and for his city is utterly infectious.' A title for the singer's memoirs is yet to be decided."

Born in 1959 in Liverpool, McCulloch was "inspired by the punk rock movement," and in 1977 started up his own band Crucial Three, alongside Julian Cope and Pete Wylie. "While the latter two later emerged in the Teardrop Explodes and Wah!," McCulloch "joined forces with guitarist Will Sergeant and bass player Les Pattinson to form Echo And The Bunnymen" at the end of 1978. ("A drum machine, dubbed 'Echo,' originally provided the group's beat, until an actual living being, Pete De Freitas, was welcomed onboard.")Material courtesy: icebergradio.com via chrissyfessler.blogspot.com
