Joined elder brother Tim's band Split Enz in 1977. Wrote their first international hit "I Got You," and contributed significantly to all their later albums, briefly assuming leadership of the band after Tim left in 1983 and until they broke up in 1984.
Formed a band called The Mullanes, which was later renamed Crowded House. Has had a reasonably successful solo career, and he and Tim have continued to work together and have recorded a total of two Finn Brothers albums as of 2004.
Both Neil and Tim were made OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to New Zealand music in the 1993 Queen's Birthday Honours List.
Split Enz are set to reform for a tour of Australia beginning in July.
