John Taylor To Publish His Autobiography.

From duranduran.com: An icon to millions, John Taylor co-founded Duran Duran in 1978 when he was just eighteen years old. Almost immediately, the band became an international pop phenomenon, defining a new genre of music and the start of an extraordinary three decade career that continues to this day, with sales of more than 80 million records, chart-topping hits around the world, and a global presence that guarantees the band huge live audiences across five continents.

In his autobiography, Taylor will give a candid and captivating account of his life, from a reserved young man in the suburbs of provincial England, to the heights of global fame and adulation. He will unflinchingly explore how the glories of excess led to drug addiction and a descent into despair and loneliness, as well as the difficult process of recovery, and the joy of rediscovering the love of family and friends. For the global army of "Duranie" fans, his book will also contain fascinating behind-the-scenes insights and stories about the band's inner workings and life in the spotlight.

John Taylor: "This book recounts the million tiny seductions that are required to make the journey from English suburbia to selling out Madison Square Garden - seductions that go by a hundred different names; family, friendship, romances, collaborations and strategic alliances. Here is my journey and where it took me; into fantastic success, more than a little decadence, darkness, and finally, I like to think, a little enlightenment."

(In the U.K.): Little, Brown and Sphere are delighted to announce the acquisition of a major new project - the autobiography of Duran Duran co-founder and bassist John Taylor. Little, Brown's Editor-in-Chief Antonia Hodgson acquired UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada) at auction from Jonathan Conway of Mulcahy Conway Associates. John Taylor will write the book himself with support from co-writer, Tom Sykes. Sphere plans to publish in hardback in autumn 2012, alongside Penguin US. Antonia Hodgson says: "We're so excited about this project. John Taylor is a warm, witty and engaging writer with an incredible story to tell. His book will be an honest and frank account of his life - good times and bad. It will also capture all the joy and glamour and craziness of being in Duran Duran - surely one of the greatest and best-loved bands of all time."

(In the U.S.): Brian Tart, president and publisher of Dutton, announced today the acquisition of Duran Duran bassist and founding member John Taylor's autobiography, to be released in the fall of 2012. Executive Editor Carrie Thornton bought North American and Canadian rights at auction in a major deal from Jonathan Conway of Mulcahy Conway Associates Ltd. Carrie Thornton says: "I'm incredibly excited to publish John Taylor's memoir. I've been a Duran Duran fan since I was first riveted by the video for 'Rio' on MTV. As someone who came of age in the 1980s, I can think of no better person to tell the story of the biggest band of that era, and to describe the excesses of that decade - the fashion, the drugs, the money, and of course, the music. John has a great tale to tell, and he tells it with honesty and intelligence, and with an absolutely great voice on the page."

Happy Duran Duran Appreciation Day!

To celebrate, the band has released a 7 1/2 minute Night Version of "Other People's Lives" from their latest album All You Need Is Now.

Duran Duran has long titled extended dance remixes of their songs "Night Versions" simply because they were intended to be played in "Nightclubs." Night Versions are longer with more "instrumental breaks."

On behalf of the Firm, in honour of DD Appreciation Day, I am excited to offer our friends this free download of the Night Version of "Other Peoples Lives." "OPL" is one of the songs I enjoy most off the latest album, and one I have been looking forward to making an extended dance version of since it was first recorded. This version was cut, edited and extended at our London studio in June '11 with engineer Josh at the controls. Mark Ronson thought it was about time we had a Night Version again so here it is. We hope you’ll get a kick out of it. With love + thanks for your continued support. Enjoy! - John Taylor

Rob Sheffield's Talking To Girls About Duran Duran To Be Available July 15.

From duranduran.com: A terrific new book will be coming out on July 15th, Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut. An unabashed Duran Duran fan, Rob Sheffield (author of Love Is a Mix Tape) has decided to play tribute to one of his musical heroes by sharing stories of how they aided him while growing up and learning all about girls. Publisher's Weekly says "…(in this) tuneful coming-of-age memoir, the glamorous New Wave band Duran Duran presides spiritually over the all-consuming teenage male efforts to comprehend the opposite sex...The result is a funny, poignant browse from a wonderful pop-culture evocateur."

According to Rob: "'Talking to girls about Duran Duran' is how I've spent my whole life! It always amazes me how huge this band is, and how much loyalty and ferocity they inspire in their listeners. They taught me a lot about music I never would have heard if not for them - stuff like Kraftwerk and Visage, Chic and Roxy Music. I remember watching MTV one night in 1983 when Simon and Nick were doing a guest VJ spot, for the world premiere of the 'Save a Prayer' video. Simon and Nick were playing all these obscure videos by brilliant artists I'd never heard of, stuff that MTV normally would never play. I’ll never forget that night.

"Like so many other American kids, I had my whole idea of music altered by Duran Duran. Simon's whole sense of wit and wordplay was way ahead of what my other favorite bands were doing at the time, along with the whole idea of blending punk and funk, which would've been unheard of for any American band.

"So I guess this book is my small attempt to pay homage to their massive presence in music and in pop culture over the years. We all owe them a lot."

Oh yes, and the other ‘f’s… You, the fans, for so many years- giving me permission to be myself (still no day job!)

I am VERY excited about our new album, but more about that soon come… In the meantime, have a great June 20, and remember, ‘All You Need is NOW’!!…

"Rio" Crowned Greatest Video Of All Time.

Duran Duran have been awarded the ultimate music video accolade by MTV viewers, who voted the band's legendary clip for their hit single "Rio," The Greatest Video Of All Time.

This is the latest honour for the band who have long been acknowledged as pioneers in this field and are widely recognized for having turned music video-making into an art form.

Lead singer Simon Le Bon said of the award: "We were all extremely honoured to hear that 'Rio' had been named the 'Greatest Video Of All Time,' particularly because it was the MTV viewers who had voted for it. Our relationship with MTV has always been a very special one to us – as we started out together and their support over the years was definitely instrumental in our success."

Le Bon said the video was, "shot on location at a time when very few artists had ventured out of the studio to film their videos. Russell (Mulcahy) did an amazing job – and should share this with us."

Fusing music, art and fashion to an unprecedented degree, Duran Duran transformed videos from what had previously been a simple marketing tool into one of the music industry's most valuable assets. With exotic locations, beautiful girls and stunning visuals, Duran Duran set a whole new standard, breaking the mould and defined an era.

On another Rio related note, on Nov. 4 Eagle Rock Entertainment will release a Rio DVD, the latest addition to the acclaimed Classic Albums series. "Released against a backdrop of riots, record unemployment and the Falklands War this optimistic and celebratory album would generate a string of hit singles and groundbreaking videos and catapult Duran Duran to global stardom. This DVD tells the story behind the writing, recording and subsequent success of the album through newly filmed interviews, musical demonstrations and both new and archive performances."

Wild Boy: My Life In Duran Duran.

Andy Taylor autobiography now available in hardcover at all retail stores, and online through Amazon.

"Guitarist of a quintessential '80s British New Wave rock group reflects on the 'roller coaster ride' of pop stardom. In prose brimming with drinking-buddy informality, Taylor begins by summarizing his middle-class upbringing in early-'70s Birmingham and his parents' doomed marriage. After stints in cover bands, he answered a guitarist-wanted ad in Melody Maker and, still in his teens, became a member of Duran Duran, the 'it' band at Birmingham's notorious Rum Runner club.

"Swept up in the 'New Romantic' movement, the quintet generated immediate industry buzz and quickly acquired fashion-model girlfriends, recreational drug habits and a fat record contract from EMI. Yet Taylor doesn't fixate too much on the expected sex-and-drugs-related action. Rather, he emphasizes the money they made and the shameless conspicuous consumption they indulged in, including juvenile hijinks at expensive hotels (Taylor ran up a $450,000 bill at one establishment) and outrageous expenditures on food, houses, video shoots, cars and parties.

"The memoir solidifies Duran Duran's status as pop music's poster children for the materialistic Reagan-Thatcher '80s. Their exotic videos, Anthony Price suits and hooky, synthesizer-heavy songs made them fixtures on the Billboard charts and darlings of the early MTV age. Taylor depicts his band mates as distant and uncommunicative, with financial success eventually leading them all into typically self-destructive behavioral scripts."

Searching For Roger Taylor.

Just when you thought that all I do is stuff bacon covered maple bars down my throat, and wonder why the world is filled with so many women that are so desperate to be loved, may I now reveal to you my great discovery of this year, the 2000 film Searching for Roger Taylor.

In Searching for Roger Taylor, director Aaron Barnett traveled from the "United Kingdom to the United States, exploring the phenomenon of the new wave movement while searching for his long missing childhood rock idol. The 'search' for Roger Taylor is the central metaphor in a much larger story: the repiecing of the '80s. This was a decade unparalleled for musical milestones."

Happy 25th Birthday Rio.

Recorded in the spring of 1982, going gold in the US in March of 1983, and platinum in April, Rio eventually reaching double platinum status. It peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the charts there for 129 weeks.

EMI in Britain had promoted Duran Duran as New Romantics, but that genre was barely known in the United States, and Capitol was at a loss about how to sell the band.

The band however, had their own plans and ambitions for promotion. They reunited with director Russell Mulcahy (who had directed the music video for their first single "Planet Earth") and planned the release of a full length video album -- eleven videos for the best songs off of the Duran Duran (released in 1981) and Rio albums. The band traveled to Sri Lanka and Antigua between tour dates to film the memorable videos for "Rio," "Hungry Like the Wolf," and "Save a Prayer."

The rest is history.

In 2000, Rio was ranked #98 in Q magazine's "100 Greatest British Albums." In 2003, it was listed at #65 in the NME "100 Greatest Albums Of All Time." In 2004, CMJ ranked it as #1 in their "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1982."

Duran Duran: 3/10/05 Rose Garden Portland Oregon.

A fan since 1982, Waist High had the pleasure of seeing the original 5 members of Duran Duran perform Thursday night at Portland's Rose Garden.

This was a first. I had tickets to a show in 1983 but I recall getting grounded for something and not being able to go. John Taylor was always my favorite, but Thursday the majority of the love in the house went to Nick Rhodes. And it came equally from men as well as women.

As we wrap up a week of only drunkenness posts, this ties in because my female date for the evening got us 86'ed from a restaurant after the show for drunkenness.

Waist High will be shutting it's doors for the day in preparation for the above.

This post is a drunkenness post because cocktails begin at 5 p.m., or to quote Glen Campbell, we will be getting "Over Served" at around 5 p.m. At no time will Waist High cease to harass her female companion for the days and evenings events about her birth year: 1981.

It's On.

Do I CONSTANTLY harass the friend that I am going with about how she was born the same year that "Girls On Film" was released? You bet I do.
