He may be an "Okie from Muskogee," but Merle Haggard is now a part of the streets of Bakersfield.

The Bakersfield City Planning Commission voted Thursday night to approve re-naming a portion of S Street to Merle Haggard Way.

"Merle is only one of two members of the Country Music Hall of Fame actually born in California," said Bill Murray. "He along with many others including Buck Owens, are accredited with changing country music industry with the still popular Bakersfield sound."

The portion of street, between Truxtun Avenue and the Amtrak Station will get the name change in May.

Merle Haggard was born in Bakersfield in 1937, according to the Country Hall of Fame and Museum.

He was elected into to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994.
