Another Mystery Solved As Waist High Answers The Tough Questions.

What is the deal with Saugus, Newhall, Valencia, Santa Clarita, Newhall, Saugus, Newhall, Valencia, Canyon Country, Saugus? Better yet, WHAT HAPPENED TO TIPS?

(Part of) the mystery solved: Henry Mayo Newhall, born 1825 in Saugus Massachusetts, gets a case of Gold Fever. He comes to California in 1849 and ends up making a nice life for himself in the San Francisco auction business.

Between the years of 1872-1875 Newhall purchases 5 of the former Mexican land grants, ranchos, which includes the 48,000 acre Rancho San Francisco in the Santa Clarita Valley.

In 1876 the town of Newhall is founded. In 1887, in honor of his former home, the nearby town of Saugus is founded.

H.M. Newhall dies in 1883, leaving his vast land holdings (143,000 acres total) to his 5 sons. The sons incorporate and form the Newhall Land and Farming Company.

In timeline form: 1910-The
Ridge Route was completed through Newhall. 1915-The Ridge Route was completed over the Tejon Pass and the town of Castaic is founded. 1936-3 full lanes of highway were completed stretching from the Newhall Pass to The Grapevine.

By the 1950s with the Southern California economy booming and L.A. urban development rapidly moving north into the Santa Clarita Valley, the Newhall's land becomes Grade A choice meat. Initial assessments of the land determine that it will be best used as the future site of significant residential development. The family does not wish to sell to residential developers but instead decides it wants to use the land for something to be proud of. They decide that on their vast ranch they will create a new town.

Named after the oranges grown on their land, in 1965 the town of Valencia is created. It was this same year that the state of California bought the right of way through the Newhall property that would eventually create the Interstate 5 extension north.

In May of 1971 Six Flags Magic Mountain opened.

In 1987 the cities of Saugus, Newhall, Canyon Country, and Valencia all incorporate to form the city of Santa Clarita, the 85th city in Los Angeles County.
